Akora Flats Guest Reviews

Very friendly, accommodating and helpful. The flat was very comfortable, well appointed kitchen with everything you need. Flat was clean, spacious, plenty of bedding, and was warm and comfy. Recently renovated, modern kitchen and bathroom. After three weeks of travelling, this was by far the best place we’ve stayed at, and best value for money. Thank you for a great stay…and would stay again. Highly recommend it!

Love this place, off peak periods come with a discount price, great owners and good condition units. Close to Lakes Entrance and its beaches.

Comfortable, clean, well priced. Happy we stayed there.

My fiancee and I spent the past week in Metung and stayed at Akora Flats, we had a fantastic time!! We were able to have our beloved dog stay with us too, not many places allow for pets to stay (what a fantastic idea). The flats are walking distance to the beach and into town and the driveway was big enough to accomodate the boat too. Highly recommended, my partner and I will definitely be staying again next Chrissy holidays!!

Great place to base yourself if you plan on exploring the area. Bring supplies the local store doesn’t have everything.

Josh Huntington

Great affordable accommodation. Comfortable for those rainy days when you can’t get out and fish. Fully equipped with everything you could need for a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle. Not our first trip and certainly won’t be our last.

Things to do

During your stay

Metung is hidden within a coastal forest and rolling hills, surrounded by the pristine water of the magnificent Gippsland Lakes.

From Metung you can travel from sand to snow in a relatively unbroken chain of ecosystems.

From coastal heathlands and forests, into the wildflower-rich eucalypt forests of the foothills.  Warm temperate rainforests of streams and shady gullies, then up to the higher rainfall tall, wet mountain forests thick with tree ferns and towering giants.

These natural wonders eventually join up with the alpine environments and snow adapted forests and herb fields of the high country.

Live like a local…

… Jaunt along the boardwalk.

… Enjoy a hearty breakfast.

… Dine in the sunshine.

… Drinks at the pub.

… Swim at the back beach.

… Jump off the jetty.

… A spot of fishing.

… A hit of tennis.

… Roll the jack down the green.

… Play at the park.

… Sit back and relax.

Fishing & Prawning

Metung is just the place to meet the needs of your inner hunter-gatherer.

Cast your line for bream, flathead, flounder, garfish, gummy shark, luderick, mullet, mulloway, estuary perch, prawns, salmon, snapper, tailor, trevally, trout, and whiting.

Water Sports

Metung’s network of lakes, creeks and rivers make it an ideal place for all kinds of water sports including sailing waterskiing, jet skiing, wake boarding, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing.

Outdoors

Take-in the clean air and tranquil setting as you walk, jog or cycle along the water’s edge.

There are several walking tracks that meander through the rolling hills of the Metung peninsula, including a gentle climb to the lookout at Chinaman’s Creek and a shady wander through the remnant Limestone Box forest of the Metung Bushland Reserve.

Perfect for families with its shallow water close to shore and gentle graduation, the Metung backbeach provides a safe and easily accessible swimming area for young children.

Alternatively, Patterson Park boasts a fabulous water play & sensory play park.

Watch the sun set over Lake King with the convenience of picnic, BBQ and toilet facilities.

If you have a boat, a trip to the Barrier Landing gives you easy access to the Ninety Mile Beach. The Barrier also has a lovely swimming beach on the lake side. Nearby Nungurner is nestled around a tiny cove, where there is also good swimming. You can also hire a boat.

Paynesville & further afield

Bairnsdale is the regional centre of East Gippsland. Take a walk along the Mitchell River and admire the beautiful old trees; a great spot to enjoy a morning or afternoon cup of tea. The Mitchell River silt jetties are a long, narrow bank of silt that have formed over millions of years and extend more than eight kilometres east into Lake King; the south bank is navigable by car from Eagle Point through to the very easternmost tip at Point Dawson. The Macleod Morass Boardwalk is a perfect example of one of the few remaining deep fresh water marshes in Victoria with large numbers of waterfowl.

There are a number of walking tracks at Paynesville and Raymond Island is one of the best places in Victoria to go koala spotting. Experience the diversity of the East Gippsland Rail Trail as it weaves from Bairnsdale to Newmerella, past undulating farmland, tall forests, creeks, rivers and flood plains; crossing over historic timber railway bridges and enjoying views of the Gippsland Lakes before arriving at Orbost and the Snowy River.

The Den of Nargun is a shallow cavern that hides behind a slight drizzle of a waterfall in Dead Cock Creek. Its aboriginal history is connected to the Kurnai tribe and the women of this group used the area for initiations and learning ceremonies. The Den itself is about a 20 minute walk from the carpark, set in a shaded rainforest gully, with the yellow wood tree and the Kanooka plant being seen at their most westerly extremes.

Metung is one of the few places on the East coast of Australia

Where you can watch the sunset over the water

Or find yourself in awe,

As you gaze at the vast night sky

Unwind while the kookaburras laugh in the old gum trees
